On the eve of their wedding, twenty-year-old Jack Fleming arranges a secret ringside seat for his sweetheart to view her only rival the "game." Through Genevieve's apprehensive eyes, we watch the prizefight that pits her fair young lover, "the Pride of West Oakland," against the savage and brutish John Ponta and that reveals as much about her own nature, and Joe's, as it does about the force that drives the two men in their violent, fateful encounter.

The Game Jack London 9781542636728 Books

A very engaging, quickly moving short story. While boxing is a key part of the story in which London describes the fighter's love of the boxing "game" and his fiancee's belief that she is at odds with his intense love of boxing, you could substitute other activities a young man is drawn to: football, baseball, chemistry, horses, etc. with the same type of complex challenge. However, in this case he is involved with a sport that is potentially deadly.
I could kind of see the inevitable ending, but hoped London would take another route in which the boy would have to make a conscious choice between his game and his love. But, London being London this story was true to his style as exhibited in other works. Of course, this is a very quick read, flawlessly written and would appeal to a very wide range of readers.

The Game Jack London 9781542636728 Books Reviews

I chose this book blindly, looking for a little distraction. As soon as it started taking about The Game, I knew there could only be a terrible ending.
It's not only about a boxing match - its about love. The writing puts you ringside, witnessing a blow by blow attack of a giant against the young favorite. The bride-to-be gets her first view of the inside of on arena in the early, brutal, days of boxing, after being snuck in, to witness her man in action. I really enjoyed the old-fashioned but descriptive writing style of Jack London.
Aha, Got me! Didn't see that ending coming. Jack London has an amazing insight into the nitty gritty of life that most of us never experienced.
The story sucks you in to thinking that you know what is going to happen. But it doesn't. He paints a picture of characters that makes you begin to take sides in a story and keeps you reading. And then he reminds you that life is what it is, not always what you wanted it to be.
i did not like this kind of reading ~ hard to follow ~ hard to pick up where you left off ~ boring
I love Jack London but this was his worst. It's a love story where he kills off the hero and plunges the heroine into a life of despair. What a crummy short story!
Once again, Jack London brings you completely in another world, in another's way of thinking and puts you in someone else's shoes for a hour. This time, the master shows us the emotions and needs of two lovers, on the brink of their wedding day. What drives a man to combat ? Could a gentle lady understand that part of him ? Life, as usual, in all its glory, its twists of fate, and its unrelenting progress.
I am always looking for short stories. At first when I saw this was Jack London, I thought it would be all he manly stuff. While much of it is, it is also the love story of two people who didn't know they were looking for love. The story is written in an older style which makes it acceptable for anyone to read. This story is about Joe courting Genevieve and Genevieve trying to understand his passion for boxing.

Joe is a boxer, one of the best who uses his winnings to support his family. Genevieve is an orphan who works in a candy shop. When they meet it is Kismet. While astonishing the neighbors at such a strange match, they plan a future together. To reach that future Joe has to lay everything on the line and fight Ponta. This fight is fairly graphic in detail.

The story is filled with passion not only between Joe and Genevieve, but also the passion for boxing that Joe has.

I highly recommend anyone to read this book.
