Dead in the Water A Kate Shugak Novel Book 3 (Audible Audio Edition) Dana Stabenow Marguerite Gavin Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Great story. The Kate Shugak storylines highlighting various elements of Alaskan living and culture are well displayed in this particular story - the hazards of seasonal commercial fishing and also the depictions of some of the Native American culture. Seller service was excellent book new or good as new, shipped and arrived as promised.
I've note that some other readers felt this novel had too much detail about crab fishing and Native Alaskan tradition. I, on the other hand, enjoyed it very much for that exact reason the details add greatly to the authenticity and even to the suspense. I had never known that fishing the bering sea could be so dangerous--the incident in which the ship iced up was more thrilling than any shoot-out. Perhaps that's because I can see Lake Superior, now virtually frozen over, from my front porch, and I know how treacherous ice can be. Stabenow's writing is always good, but this book put me in a specific place more vividly than any of her others that I have read. I would advise any reader with a true interest in the far North to ignore the carping and go for this one.
I was given Ms. Stabenow's first two novels in the audio version. I am a big reader of mysteries and decided to listen to them while on a long trip. My wife and I thought they were great books. The stories held our attention and we could not wait to read the next book. We found that Ms. Stabenow has written several Kate Shugak novels so we plan to acquire the whole series. I generally read Historical Mysteries, but I am going to make an exception for Ms. Stabenow. Great books and fascinating stories.
Dead In The Water is the third book in the Kate Shugak series. Kate joins a crab fishing crew who fish on the Bering Sea. . She is under cover to find out what happened to two young fishermen who went missing. The fishing scenes are so vivid. One can feel the wind, cold and the rolling of the rough sea. This was written before the tv series The Deadliest Catch was made. It was reseached very well as it depicted the fishing conditions that the Deadliest Catch series portrays The location always plays a major role in this series and is a real strength.

Kate is a strong likeable protagonist. There was a scene at the end that was quite exciting. This mystery series is different than many other mystery series. I think Nevada Barr fans might like this series. It is a well written series that I plan to continue with.
There are mysteries and there are mysteries that stand above the rest. This book, the third in a series, and I have found all to be first rate. Apart from the fact that the author writes well, she knows her subject. Like Martin Cruz Smith knows Russia, like Nevada Barr knows the National Park System, Dana Stabenow knows Alaska and her people. Her central character, Kate Shugak, is unique, facinating and believable. An Aleut women with a past, proven talent, issues with which to deal in her life and relationships, I would put her in the same league as Anna Pigeon, Arkady Renko, Joe Grey, and even Holmes. This is another of those series of which all I need to know is another book is available and I'll buy it knowing I'll be guaranteed of hours of adventure in reading. Like the other great series it is best enjoyed by reading them in order and I am most appreciative of the fact that the cover for each includes its number. I seriously suggest starting with the first, A Cold Day for Murder, and you can't go wrong.
Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series has fast become one of my favorite mystery series of all time, and I've only finished the third book in the series, Dead in the Water. This book finds Kate on a crabbing ship, the Avilda, in the Bering Sea, not because she has a new job, but because Jack has asked her to go aboard as a crew member in order to find out what happened to two other crew members who disappeared several months ago.

The book starts out with a very exciting scene with the ship rolling about in stormy seas, and with Kate having to do such heavy work with no food and no sleep for quite a while. Knowing Kate, she'll do what she has to in order to prove herself, and in front of a male crew, she won't give up. She is fortunate enough to have for a bunkmate, Andy Pence, who is a vegetarian and a practitioner of yoga. He is a very humorous character and I really loved his presence in this book a lot.

There is a lot of information on the Aleutian Islands and their part in WWII, and also more of the native Aleut culture. I also learned a lot about the crabbing business and about the different kinds of crabs. We don't get to see Mutt in this book, or Kate's other friends, but new ones such as Andy appear. The one thing that I do think that Dana Stabenow is so good at is her descriptions of the land, and also what the sea looked like at different times and she explains in the introduction that she was on a boat similar to this for a long time in her younger days. I especially like the description of the island of Anua.

Auntie Olga is a fascinating character who Kate gets to know, also. Her customs and the fact that some of them are completely disappearing is sad.

Kate really takes the plunge to solve this mystery, and for me it was a very satisfying ending and a very enjoyable book.
